GAINESVILLE - Downtown Gainesville will be turned over to bicycle racers and their fans starting at 3:00 Saturday afternoon.
The Maxxis Georgia Cup is returning to town for the third straight year.
Pre-race events begin at mid-afternoon with the first of several races over downtown streets beginning at 6:00; the final race - the main event - begins at 9:00.
The Maxxis Georgia Cup presented by Lowe's Mortgage features four competitions and corresponding jerseys: The white GC jersey for the leader of the series, the yellow jersey for race leader of each event, Most Aggressive Rider jersey for sprint primes, and the King of the Mountains.
The first race of the season was held in Albany. After Gainesville, the tour moves on to Savannah, Dahlonega, Rome, Lagrange, Nashville, Tenn., Birmingham, Ala., Rock Hill, S.C., and concluding in the East Village of Buckhead in Atlanta with the Aaron's Buckhead Grand Prix.
What can you expect in Gainesville Saturday?
Riders tearing around a short criterium course laid out over downtown streets. About 300 nationally ranked riders, who will pedal at speeds most of us only can reach in our cars, are expected for the event. And unlike the seconds-long blur of Tour de Georgia, the Grand Prix will give spectators a chance to see the race from start to finish
