Coming to your mailbox: a copy of the Ten Commandments

WINDER - A statewide organization that has fought to allow the Ten Commandments in government buildings is changing its strategy.

The leaders of Ten-Commandments-Georgia are working to get the displays into private homes rather than fighting to keep them on display in courthouses and municipal buildings.

The group's executive director, Mike Griffin, says members have started mailing brochures featuring tear-out copies of the Ten Commandments to every mailbox in Barrow, Elbert and Hart counties.

He says the mass mailing is part of the group's original mission to get a copy of the Ten Commandments into every home in Georgia.

It also includes a pitch for donations to Ten Commandments Georgia. Martin says he has no qualms about that, adding, "the pitch for donations is only n there because somebody might look at this and say 'that's a great idea. We'd like to be involved in something like this. It's good, it's wholesome.'"

Ten Commandments-Georgia was founded in 2005 to help Barrow County pay its legal expenses after the American Civil Liberties Union sued the county to have a Ten Commandments display removed from the Barrow County Courthouse.

Griffin says members of Ten Commandments-Georgia chapters in Blakely, Douglas and Dougherty counties have expressed interest in organizing mass mailings.
