CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator John Shoop was hired Friday to fill the same position on Butch Davis' staff at North Carolina.<br>

Shoop, who also has NFL coaching experience with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers, began this season as the Raiders' tight ends coach and was elevated to offensive coordinator for the final five games.<br>

``I developed a great amount of admiration and respect for John's coaching and teaching abilities after coaching against him and watching him grow from an assistant to a coordinator in the NFL,'' Davis said. ``He not only does an excellent job tutoring the quarterback position, but he develops offenses that emphasize the playmaking ability of the team's personnel.''<br>

Shoop, 37, was mentioned as a candidate for the vacant Raiders' head coaching job after Art Shell was fired. The Raiders' offense finished last in the NFL this season with 168 points the fifth-lowest total in a 16-game season.<br>

``I'm thrilled to be at the University of North Carolina and working for Coach Davis,'' Shoop said. ``Our goal will be to develop an attacking offense that can compete at the highest level.''
