Bethel Park meeting planned in Cumming

By by Ken Stanford
CUMMING - Forsyth County was recently given two months by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to come up with a plan for Bethel Park - and now county commissioners want to hear from you.

The park has been at the center of controversy since plans were revealed last year for a YMCA youth camp there.

About 250 angry Forsyth county homeowners filled a church one night last May determined to derail plans for the youth camp.

Now, the Corps says the county has until February 28 to come up with a plan for the park - and commissioners have scheduled a meeting January 30 at 7:00 in the commission meeting room in Cumming to get public input.

County officials say if they lease the park from the Corps, they intend to implement the Corps' master plan for the park with the addition of some new facilities. Should this occur, the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department would be responsible for developing new facilities, programming and maintaining the park.

In the meantime, the county is conducting an online survey regarding potential uses and plans for the park. It will remain on the county's Web site through the end of January.
