Kentucky's offensive line features two newcomers to position

By
LEXINGTON, Ky. - At center, a former 180-pound high school fullback who had never snapped a ball in a game until a week ago. At offensive guard, a recent convert from defensive tackle who would have preferred to stay there.

Meet the patchwork offensive line of the Kentucky Wildcats, featuring two unlikely starters in Trai Williams and Jason Leger.

Injuries have dwindled the line depth for coach Rich Brooks, so for the Florida game last week, Brooks decided to get a little creative.

With starting center Matt McCutchan nursing a sprained ankle, in came Williams a 286-pound senior who played guard all three years at Kentucky and even began his high school career as a fullback when he weighed 100 pounds less.

Williams says adding snaps to a lineman's duties is a little more difficult than it looks. McCutchan is expected to play Saturday against Central Michigan, but Brooks says Williams will likely start his second straight game.

``It seems so concrete, but it's really got a lot more to it than you think,'' Williams said. ``You're like a quarterback for the line. You try to make all the calls, keep everybody straight and try to see the blitz just like a quarterback sees the blitz.''

With backup linemen Micah Jones, Zach Hennis and Jorge Gonzalez all expected to miss the season, and Aaron Miller deemed academically ineligible, Brooks decided to switch Leger one of his fiercest defensive players to offense. Leger has already been named the starting right guard for the Central Michigan game.

Leger, who played both sides of the ball in high school, said he just wants to help the team win although he acknowledges he likes his old position more.

``Coach came in on Sunday morning, asked me if I'd like to do it,'' Leger said. ``I said, 'Not really, but whatever helps the team.'''

Williams says he tried to lobby Leger to join the offensive line long before Brooks made the change.

``I've been telling him for years, why don't you just come on over?'' Williams said. ``We're happy to have him.''

Brooks had rave reviews for how both players fared against Florida, particularly Leger.

``He's one of the strongest guys on our team,'' Brooks said. ``He also has quickness. He's aggressive. He brings a toughness to an area on our team that needs more toughness.''

Going into the season, Kentucky was expected to dazzle in the running game, but it hasn't worked out that way. Part of the reason is the team has had so much success throwing it. Quarterback Andre Woodson is tied for second in the nation with 10 touchdown passes.

Running backs Rafael Little and Tony Dixon have been nursing minor injuries of their own, but both say they will be ready Saturday. With more defensive players keying on Woodson, the ground attack could start to open up.

Dixon says he is confident in his new linemen, although he acknowledges it is strange getting blocks from Leger, a player who normally tries to tackle him in practice.

``I kind of look at him and laugh,'' Dixon said. ``I'm used to him being on the other side of the ball.''
