GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany - Portugal has done it to England once again.<br>

The Portuguese have reached the World Cup semifinals by downing the Brits 3-to-1 in a shootout after playing 120 scoreless minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo clinched the victory by beating Paul Robinson on Portugal's fifth kick after Ricardo stopped three of four England shots.<br>

England ended the match without David Beckham and Wayne Rooney. Beckham was taken off in the 52nd minute after his right ankle was stepped on by defender Nuno Valente. Rooney received a red card in the 62nd minute for stomping on the groin of Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho.<br>

Portugal beat England on penalty kicks in the European Championship quarterfinals two years ago. It's also the second straight World Cup in which England has been ousted by a team coached by Luis Felipe Scolari. He led Brazil to a 2-to-1 quarterfinal win over the English en route to the title.<br>

Portugal will appear in its first World Cup semifinal in 40 years on Wednesday. The Portuguese will take on the winner of today's match between Brazil and France.<br>
