Crowded animal shelter plans to euthanize dogs

By The Associated Press

Workers at the Clayton County Animal Shelter need to apply sealant to the floors to cut down on the incidents of parvo -- a dog disease.

But they say too many dogs are at the shelter in Jonesboro to do the work. The shelter plans to euthanize 20 dogs this weekend to clear space.

Meanwhile, dog rescue groups such as K-Nine Angels are trying to make plans to save the animals.

The dogs were to be euthanized today, but Clayton County Assistant Police Chief Jeff Turner has ordered all dogs held until tomorrow morning in an effort to give the rescue groups more time.

Turner says the county will apply sealant to half the shelter while putting the dogs in the other half and then repeat the process. He says half the shelter is NOT big enough for all the dogs.

About 30 dogs already were scheduled to be put down this weekend. Now 20 more are to be euthanized.

Turner says any animals turned in for the next ten to 12 days also will be killed because there is no room.

The shelter will be open from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow.
