Mike Groh named offensive coordinator at Virginia

By
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Virginia football coach Al Groh on Friday named his son Mike, a former quarterback at Virginia, as the Cavaliers offensive coordinator.

The announcement came as Al Groh gathered his staff, including new defensive coordinator Mike London and three new assistant coaches, to meet with the media.

The staff shuffling was necessitated by an exodus of four assistant coaches after last season. Three of the coaches that left took head coaching positions.

Mike Groh, 34, replaces Ron Prince as coordinator. Prince is now the head coach at Kansas State. Groh will also continue as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator.

London was Virginia's recruiting coordinator for three seasons, but left in 2004 to join the staff of the NFL's Houston Texans. When head coach Dom Capers was fired after this season, London returned to Charlottesville as defensive coordinator.

The job came open when Al Golden left to become head coach at Temple.

Associate head coach Danny Rocco also left to become the head coach at Liberty, and linebackers coach Mark D'Onofrio left to join Golden's staff with the Owls.

Along with London, the Cavaliers added Steve Bernstein as assistant head coach for the defense, Bob Diaco as special teams coordinator and Dave Borbely as running game coordinator and offensive line coach.

(Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press.
