CLARKESVILLE - In a star-studded field, host Habersham Central and Gainesville both put together top-notch performances Saturday at the Apple Mountain Invitational.
Gainesville won a three-way tiebreaker with Habersham and Cartersville for third place in a 21-team field that boasted one reigning state champion (Etowah) and seveal Class AAAAA programs considered among the state's best.
Class AAAAA Peachtree Ridge won the event edging Class AAAA state champ Etowah by one stroke, 288-289.
Gainesville, Habersham Central, and Cartersville all finished at 301 but Gainesville won the tiebreaker on Trey Bowlings 81 in the No. 5 slot. The top four count for scoring and the fifth is used in tiebreaker situations.
St. Pius (306), North Gwinnett (309), Carrollton (310), Seneca (S.C.) (311), and Dacula (314) rounded out the top 10 teams.
Habersham's Will Lewallen came away with the medalist honors shooting a sizzling 66. Brent Modak of St. Pius was second with a 68 and Gainesville's Jace Windom took third with a 69.
Gainesville coach Bryson Worley thought it was a good showing for his Red Elephants.
"I was pretty pleased," he said. "We played very well against a tough field. I was actually very surprised that 301 held up for third. But, we still have a lot of work to do. We don't want to be satisfied."
In the individual scores, Bryan Allred of Etowah and Drew Ernst of Seneca (S.C.) tied for fourth with scores of 70.
