Georgia's aging Groundhog Day forecaster predicts early spring

By The Associated Press

Georgia's groundhog -- General Beauregard Lee -- is getting ready to make his prediction about spring this morning.

Last year Beau failed to see his shadow at his home at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn. He also brought along a surprise -- his new girlfriend.

Beau's take last year differed from that of his northern rival. Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous furry forecaster, saw his shadow on Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania -- suggesting another six weeks of wintry weather.

No official records of Beau's forecasts have been kept, but his owner -- Art Rilling -- says he's only missed once in his 15-year career -- a 93 percent accuracy rate. That one miss was a biggie, however, when he called for an early spring in 1993 and the worst blizzard in decades blasted the South.

___

On the Net:

HASH(0x1cd9cac)
