Georgia's groundhog, Gen. Beauregard Lee, was getting ready Thursday morning to make his prediction on whether spring will come early or not.

Last year, Beau failed to see his shadow at his home at the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn. He also brought along a surprise: his new girlfriend.

Beau's prediction last year differed from that of his northern rival. Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous furry forecaster, saw his shadow on Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Penn. _ suggesting another six weeks of wintry weather.

No official records of Beau's forecasts have been kept, but his owner, Art Rilling, has said he's only missed once in his career.

But that one miss was a biggie. Beau called for an early spring in 1993 and the worst blizzard in decades blasted the South.

Still, Beau's prognosticating prowess has earned him honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Georgia and Georgia State University.

___

On the Net:

HASH(0x1cd9ff4)
