Nuwaubian property nets Putnam County more than $500,000

<p>Sale of property seized from Nuwaubian Nation of Moors leader Malachi York netted the Putnam County Sheriff's Office $545,985, officials said Tuesday.</p><p>The 476-acre compound of the predominantly black, quasi-religious group, which was seized by the federal government in August 2004, was sold in June.</p><p>A check was presented to Putnam County on Tueseday. The IRS received about $99,270 from the sale, and about $350,000 went to the FBI.</p><p>York founded the Nuwaubian group in New York in the late 1960s and moved it to rural Putnam County in 1993. He was convicted in federal court in January 2004 of 10 counts of child molestation and racketeering, and sentenced to 135 years in federal prison.</p><p>About $1 million worth of property and cash were seized in Athens from York also, but have not been liquidated yet, said Pete Peterman, acting U.S. Attorney.</p><p>The prosecutor said that when that property is sold, the proceeds will be split by the same agencies.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x1cd9d24)</p>
