Robbers blamed for holdups in Georgia, Florida

By The Associated Press

Officials believe the same three armed robbers are responsible for a series of holdups in Georgia and Florida over the past two months, and that they may be working along interstate highways into other states.

Over the last month, they are believed to have robbed hotels, loan offices and auto parts stores in Cordele, Perry and Warner Robins, Ga., and in Ocala and St. Johns County, Fla.

Investigators are looking into similar robberies that occurred at a Tifton loan company and a gift shop in Lumberton, N.C., to determine if they are connected.

The suspects, described only as three black males, one tall with braids, robbed an Ocala hotel in June, duct-tapping the attendants and making off with an undisclosed amount of money.

"I have no question that these robberies are related," Ocala detective Richard Martin told The Tifton Gazette.

Martin said each time they walked into a store or hotel, asked strange questions, then hopped over the counter and subdued the victims with duct tape or zip ties. Each time they fled in a dark, late model Oldsmobile or Buick with a blue and white tag.

"These guys know what they're doing," Martin said. "Since they aren't wearing masks, I don't believe they mean to stay in the same place for very long."

Because all of the robberies have occurred within a half-mile of an interstate, police are encouraging tourists and hotel employees to be on the alert.
