KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Kevin Slowey scattered seven hits in a complete game on Friday as Winthrop defeated Wichita State 2-1 in the first game of the NCAA Knoxville regional.<br>

Winthrop (44-20) scored in the eighth on Tommy Lentz's RBI single, and Slowey retired the Shockers (49-23) in order in the ninth.<br>

Slowey (14-2), a junior, struck out 13 and walked none.<br>
<br>
Wichita State's Mike Pelfrey (12-3) also went the distance, allowing eight hits and striking out seven.<br>
<br>
In the eighth, Winthrop's Jacob Dempsey drew a one-out walk and advanced on Matt Repec's single to center field. Dempsey was replaced by pinch runner Mike Honce.<br>

Lentz hit a grounder between third baseman Derek Schermerhorn and shortstop Nick McCoola and Honce scored without a play at the plate.<br>

Winthrop took a 1-0 lead in the first on Daniel Carte's home run to right-center field, his 19th homer of the season.<br>

Wichita State tied it at 1-1 in the fourth off Schremerhorn's RBI sacrifice bunt to score Damon Sublett, who had led off with a triple.<br>
