New area code will be 762

ATLANTA - The state Public Service Commission says 762 will be the new area code in the 706 area which includes most of northeast Georgia.

The announcement comes just days after the PSC formally approved 10-digit dialing for the 706 region and a new area code.

As previously reported, the new area code will be for new phone numbers only and 10-digit dialing will begin as an option in September before becoming mandatory in April.
