The spelling of Spelman Avenue is now correct after a student at the college for which the street is named asked the mayor to fix it.

For decades, the street was Spellman Avenue, but Spelman student Brittany Mosby said she believed it was the result of a misspelling.

Nearby streets in the predominantly black neighborhood are named after historically black college and universities like Spelman College in Atlanta.

"It can be assumed that the Spellman on the street sign is actually referring to Spelman College," Mosby, 19, said in a letter she wrote last year to Major David Bradshaw.

Mosby, daughter of one of the town's councilmen, unveiled the new sign with the correct spelling during a short ceremony Tuesday.

"I'm very, very excited," she said.

Bradshaw called Mosby a great ambassador for the city, better known for its roll in the Manhattan Project to build the atomic bomb.

"It took one of our own to figure out it was spelled wrong," he said.
