Police investigate shooting that left 2-year-old brain dead

By The Associated Press

Investigators still do not know who fired the shot that left a 2-year-old boy brain dead because the bullet is still lodged in the boy's neck, Clayton County police said Saturday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Olen Smith said the bullet will not be removed until an autopsy is performed.

The boy, Xavier Miranda, was on a mechanical breathing machine for organ donation, as requested by the boy's mother, after he was declared brain dead Friday, Smith said. He added that he did not know when the organ donation procedure would take place.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to search for the gunman who allegedly kicked in the apartment door of the boy's father, William Miranda, on Thursday night, picked up the toddler and demanded $1,000 from a tax return check the boy's mother had cashed earlier that day.

According to police, the gunman counted down as if he were going to shoot the child. When he counted down to one, the boy's aunt walked into the room and the perpetrator pushed her to the floor, police said.

Shots then were fired by both the suspect and the father, according to police.

"There were multiple shots fired," Smith said. "As to the exact number of shots, that is not known yet."

He said it was not known if the intruder was still holding the boy when the father fired shots.

Xavier was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in critical condition, and was declared brain dead the next morning.

Four adults and two children were in the house when the gunman barged in. One of the bullets also grazed the neck of Xavier Miranda's 4-year-old brother, said his aunt, Shikita Jones.

Witnesses told police they heard, but did not see, the shots fired.

The boy's mother, Chimere Calloway, 22, said she was with her cousin when her son was shot, but she said she heard the shots as they drove up to the apartment, located in a crime-stricken section of the Atlanta suburb.

Xavier made everyone around him smile, said a crying Calloway during an interview with WAGA-TV. "He was always dancing and singing," she said.

Police searching for the intruder Saturday "have a few leads in the field they are trying to track down," Smith said. The suspect was described as a thin, short-haired black man wearing a blue-and-black jacket and a white T-shirt.
