A new Cherokee County high school's name will honor an American Indian tribe that once called the area home instead of a Civil War-era Georgia governor who lived in the county.

By a unanimous vote Thursday night, the Cherokee County Board of Education chose Creekview High School as the name for the school set to open in 2006.

The board voted last month to name the school for Gov. Joseph E. Brown, but a strong community protest led the board to send the matter back to a naming committee.

Many parents and students at Creekland Middle School, located across the street from the new high school, said the school should not be named for a man who was once a secessionist and defended slavery.

The naming committee originally recommended the new high school be named Creekland, but the board said policy does not allow two schools to carry the same name.

Creekview was proposed as a compromise choice.

"I was happy to see that they let the student body vote on it," said board member Janet Read. "I think it's going to be a great name."

The compromise choice also had the support of the board's leadership.

"It still maintains a reference to a Native American tribe that was in the area," said Cherokee Superintendent of Schools Frank Petruzielo.

Board chairman Mike Chapman said Creekview "meets the criteria for the policy."

Dave Henson of Woodstock said he is disappointed the school will not be named for Brown, who made his home in Canton.

"It's sad that it's an uphill battle to get history recognized," Henson said.

Brown was a four-term governor from 1857-65, U.S. Sen. and chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.

Brown is honored with a state historical marker on Marietta Street in Canton. A statue of Brown and his wife, Elizabeth Grisham Brown, was placed on the state Capitol grounds in 1928. Brown's son, Joseph Mackey Brown, served two terms as Georgia's governor.

The school board also approved the names for two other new schools _ Freedom Middle School and William G. Hasty Sr. Elementary School.
