RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina State hired former Syracuse assistant Steve Dunlap as defensive coordinator Monday.<br>

Dunlap replaces Reggie Herring, who left the Wolfpack in early December to take the same job at Arkansas. Under Herring, the Wolfpack led Division I-A in total defense last season, allowing only an average of 221 yards.<br>

``I am excited to have someone with Steve Dunlap's experience and expertise join our staff,'' N.C. State coach Chuck Amato said. ``He has an aggressive mentality and philosophy that will help us continue to build a defensive powerhouse here in Raleigh.''<br>

At Syracuse, Dunlap was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2004, and served as assistant head coach during the two seasons before that. He also spent 17 seasons at West Virginia, serving as defensive coordinator from 1991-2000 under Don Nehlen.
