The only day shelter for homeless people in Athens is set to close after a federal grant was not renewed.

The Athens Homeless Day Service Shelter, which opened in 2000, lost a $79,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that had paid for most of the shelter's costs.

The shelter will probably close sometime in late January, said case manager Marshall Marrotte. Officials were not told why the shelter lost the grant, said Rob Trevena, a program administrator with Athens-Clarke County.

The shelter is run by Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, which contracts with the state to provide housing, health care and counseling to low-income and homeless people. It's a place where homeless people can make telephone calls, pick up mail, shower and get referrals to other services during the day.

The Athens Area Homeless Shelter, one of the city's largest homeless shelters, also is expected to close its doors in February because of eroding government grants and declining donations.

___

HASH(0x1cd9e34)
