Prosecutors seek to delay trial in 1990 death

By The Associated Press

A prosecutor sought Monday to delay the trial of a suburban Atlanta dentist accused of killing his former girlfriend 15 years ago in Augusta.

District Attorney Danny Craig told Superior Court Judge Carl C. Brown Jr. that evidence in the June 6, 1990 death of Dolly Hearn is mirrored by the Dec. 4, 2004 death of Dr. Barton Corbin's estranged wife in Gwinnett County.

Both women were found with fatal gunshot wounds to the head. Authorities believed they might have committed suicide, but investigators in Augusta reopened the Hearn case after last year's death of Jennifer Corbin.

Craig wants to use evidence in the more recent death as a "similar transaction" to link Corbin to Hearn's death. But Corbin's lawyers say any similarities are characteristics of suicide and using the evidence from the Gwinnett County death in Hearn's case would be unfair.

Brown took the issue under advisement and will hold another hearing for remaining pretrial motions.

___

HASH(0x1cd9edc)
