Glad bag plant closing to idle 350 workers

By The Associated Press

Glad Manufacturing is closing its plant in Cartersville after 45 years of producing plastic bags, cutting 350 jobs.

"It was a difficult decision for this location, but it's for the long-term health of the Glad business," plant manager Kent Barnhart said Thursday.

Barnhart said the hourly workers will lose their jobs by next June. Details including severance packages and job-placement services are still under negotiation with the local union, he said.

Costs of manufacturing and distributing bags for sandwiches, frozen food and trash entered into the decision to close the Cartersville plant, Barnhart said.

Glad has three other manufacturing plants _ in Arkansas, Ohio and Virginia _ that are not producing at their full capacity.

Mayor Mike Fields said the closing would be "incredibly bad for us." The Glad jobs pay about $15 to $17 per hour, compared with the northwest Georgia city's average of $13 to $14 an hour.

___

HASH(0x2866614)
