Volek doesn't regret decision to sign with Titans instead of Atlanta

By
NASHVILLE, TENN - Billy Volek stood in for the starting quarterback Friday morning, tossing passes all over the field. The Tennessee Titans are very happy he's in their backfield and not with the Atlanta Falcons on the other side.

Volek visited twice with the Falcons this offseason as team officials searched for someone who could back up Michael Vick. Volek even took his wife to Atlanta for the second trip and looked at some houses.

But the four-year veteran who also talked with Buffalo decided he liked what he had in Tennessee and stayed with the Titans in a decision he doesn't regret. Practicing against the Falcons the past two days has been a strange experience.

``It's really weird,'' Volek said. ``I've been telling everybody I was real close to signing with them.''

The Falcons currently have 12-year veteran Ty Detmer on the roster as insurance, and they drafted Matt Shaub out of Virginia in the third round in April. Shaub got plenty of extra work Friday with Vick watching and resting his strained right hamstring.

Volek said he talked with Mora who advised him not to look back. His teammates aren't helping, though.

``Vick went down, and (Titans cornerback) Samari (Rolle) says, `Uh-oh, Billy would've been starting.' Things could happen. You've just got to play the cards you're dealt, and I got dealt a pretty good hand,'' Volek said.

VOICE FROM THE PAST: Titans safety Lance Schulters worked under Atlanta coach Jim Mora with the San Francisco 49ers for the first four years of his career. So it's good thing the Falcons don't have the Titans on the schedule this season.

Mora said he hated losing Schulters when he came to the Titans and called him a fun and emotional guy.

``He's got the Mike Tyson voice going. I just had a good conversation with him. We were laughing yesterday, (defensive coordinator) Greg Knapp and I, standing back there because every formation we had, he's like `Watch this spot. Let's all go.' He had it all down. I was giving him trouble about it,'' Mora said.

TITANS INJURY REPORT: Running back Chris Brown returned to practice in the afternoon but didn't do much before the Titans eased him back. Coach Jeff Fisher said he won't do anything in the scrimmage followed by a day off Sunday.

``It just doesn't make a lot of sense for us to push him. He's got some tightness. He does not have a hamstring strain or pull or injury. He's just tight, and I think it's a result of the workload. We just want to be smart about this,'' Fisher said.

Brown currently is the top running back in the rotation with the Titans looking for a starter to replace their all-time rusher Eddie George.

Schulters sat out the afternoon along with DT Kevin Carter. Receiver Drew Bennett sat out the morning session with a sore hamstring but practiced in the afternoon.

Fisher said offensive tackle Matt Martin likely will miss a couple days with a sore shoulder.

FALCONS INJURY REPORT: The Falcons rested 13 players not counting Michael Vick in the afternoon session, including running back Warrick Dunn, receiver Peerless Price and defensive end Patrick Kearney (groin). Defensive tackle Ed Jasper (sprained right knee) sat out both.

Linebacker Chris Draft didn't come with the team to Nashville, and Mora said he met with a specialist in Atlanta because they want to make sure he is fine before the season starts. The coach talked with Draft on Thursday night and planned to check in with him again Friday.

``We think everything is just fine with him. It's just precautionary before we get going so we can avoid any problems down the road,'' Mora said.

EXTRA YARDS: Officials have been working these two days of practices, and the Titans saw a video pointing out the NFL's rules changes and points of emphasis for the upcoming season. The Titans were featured in an example of a group celebration that will be flagged, while former receiver Justin McCareins showed up when a Tampa Bay defender hit him in the head last year. Fisher, a member of the league's competition committee, said he had no input on the video. He said the players got a kick out of being in the video. ``They will not get a kick out of it if they're penalized for celebration,'' he said. ... Fox broadcaster Terry Bradshaw stopped by the afternoon practice. ... Atlanta rookie linebacker Demorrio Williams got close to blocking two punts by Pro Bowler Craig Hentrich in the afternoon.
