Accountant gets 12 years for bank robbery

<p>An Athens accountant was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for robbing a bank of nearly $19,000 while wearing a stocking mask and firing a sawed-off shotgun.</p><p>Glenn Augustine, 48, pleaded guilty to two of three counts of an indictment charging him with the Dec. 18 robbery of the First American Bank. He made a plea deal with prosecutors and was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Macon.</p><p>He also must repay the balance of the stolen money that was not recovered _ $1,978 _ and serve three years probation, said U.S. attorney Max Wood.</p><p>Augustine robbed the bank because he was trying to find a way out of mounting debt, said his attorney, Ed Tolley.</p><p>Augustine had lost two corporate jobs and was trying to maintain his upper-middle class lifestyle, Tolley said.</p><p>He was arrested after a woman took down his license plate number, a bank security camera helped identify him by the clothes he was wearing and a fingerprint was lifted from a grocery bag, according to court documents.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x2871374)</p>
