GTA season lineup announced

GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA) has announced the lineup for its 2004-05.

Three Mainstage shows are scheduled: 'Gypsy,' 'As You Like,' and, 'Look Homeward, Angel.'

In addition, 'Sleeping Beauty,' a new adaptation set in Asia, will be presented by WonderQuest, the GTA's theatre for young audiences. And, the GTA Touring Repertory Company has two plays scheduled this season.


SLEEPING BEAUTY

On the far side of the world, in an ancient land of cherry blossoms and careful harmony, a princess is born who is showered with love and blessings. A jealous fairy lurks, waiting to destroy the happiness of those who slighted her in this tale of honor, courage and kindness. Appropriate for grades 1-5. Directed by Gay H. Hammond.

Tickets: $8 adults, $6 children

SLEEPING BEAUTY Stage Tour, Tuesday, September 21, 2004, 6pm. A free backstage tour with director Gay H. Hammond, plus costume designer Jim Alford, set designer Bob Upton, and light designer Heather Ward. Refreshments.


GYPSY
Book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
November 9-21, 2004
Brenau University's Hosch Theatre (John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts, 429 Academy Street, Gainesville 30501).
The musical traces the heartbreak and triumph of Gypsy Rose Lee's transformation from vaudeville child performer to the Queen of Burlesque. Mama Rose, the ultimate stage mom, is played by Equity actor Ingrid Cole. Directed by GTA artistic director Jim Hammond. PG

Tickets: $18-20 adults, $16-18 seniors, $14-16 students

GYPSY Stage Tour, Tuesday, October 26, 2004, 6pm: A free backstage tour with director Jim Hammond, music director Dale Grogan, choreographer Teme Leve, costume designer Jim Alford, and set designer Dennis Mauldin. Cast members will perform numbers from the show. Refreshments.


AS YOU LIKE IT

February 15-27, 2005
Brenau University's Hosch Theatre (John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts, 429 Academy Street, Gainesville 30501).
This Shakespeare classic contrasts the stifling life in a court full of deceit and danger with the possibilities for love and growth found in the magical Forest of Arden, where fools philosophize, love triumphs, and life can truly be - as you like it. Directed by Gay H. Hammond. PG

LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL

This Pulitzer Prize-winning American classic is a coming-of-age story set in Altamont, North Carolina. Bursting with the eccentricities of small-town life, Look Homeward, Angel has been called by critics, "one of the finest plays in American dramatic literature...a milestone in our time" Directed by Jim Hammond. GTA Touring Repertory Company
The GTA Rep Company performs free of charge from October to March at schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and elsewhere.

Jumping Mouse

Based on a Native American legend, Jumping Mouse is the story of a generous and courageous mouse who voyages to a far-off land and becomes a magnificent soaring eagle.


MEDEA
By Euripides, adapted by Gay H. Hammond, directed by Rory Ledbetter
This is the story of Medea, wife of Jason, leader of the Argonauts, and her chilling plot of revenge against an unfaithful husband and his new child-bride.
Gainesville Theatre Alliance is a creative collaboration of Gainesville College, Brenau University, Theatre Professionals, the Northeast Georgia Community and Theatre Wings.
