Two dead in Apache helicopter crash at Fort Stewart

<p>An Army Longbow Apache helicopter crashed at Fort Stewart during a nighttime training mission, killing two pilots, the Army said.</p><p>The helicopter went down in a wooded area Tuesday night, and the Army was still investigating what caused the crash, said Lt. Col. Cliff Kent at Fort Stewart.</p><p>The flight was part of routine training required to maintain aviators' combat readiness in dark or extreme environmental conditions, Kent said.</p><p>"A loss of any soldiers is a loss by all of us," Kent said. "We wanted to express our condolences from Fort Stewart and the Army community to their family and friends."</p><p>The aircraft took off from Hunter Army Airfield, about 40 miles from Fort Stewart. It was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division's 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment.</p><p>The names of the soldiers killed in the crash were withheld until their families are notified. No one else was on board.</p><p>The Army Safety Center was sending a team to investigate.</p>
