North Carolina woman killed when boat overturns in storm

By The Associated Press

Divers have recovered the body of a North Carolina woman who died after the shrimp boat she was in capsized during a storm in Sapelo Sound north of Brunswick.

The body of Sharon Hill, 49, of Sneads Ferry, N.C., was found early Monday morning, nearly eight hours after a Sunday afternoon storm overturned the 68-foot trawler.

The boat's captain, Harry Ray Liverman of Sneads Ferry, N.C., was rescued.

Liverman was washed overboard during the storm. But the occupants of a passing motor yacht pulled him from the water, said Jonathan Henson, a senior investigating officer for the U.S. Coast Guard's Marine Safety Office.

While the boat's sinking is still being investigated, early indications are that it was caused by the weather, Henson said.

"The best guess we can make is a microburst. Winds can be at 100 miles an hour," Henson said. "... It's just one of those freaks of nature."

___

HASH(0x28665d0)
