Gainesville captures AAA golf title; Glynn Academy sweeps in AAAAA

<p>Gainesville High School turned what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for its girls golf team into another Class AAA state championship Monday.</p><p>Led by sophomore Lauren Darnell, the Red Elephants won their second straight title and fifth in seven years at Chattahoochee Golf Club in their hometown.</p><p>Elsewhere, Glynn Academy swept the boys and girls titles in Class AAAAA, Dalton captured the AAAA boys championship and Savannah Christian took the boys crown in AAA. Vidalia (boys) and Blessed Trinity (girls) were the winners in AA.</p><p>Gainesville lost three seniors off last season's championship team.</p><p>"Everyone thought it was going to be a rebuilding season," coach Manson Hill said. "The girls worked really hard through the season. This is an incredible finish to a great season."</p><p>Gainesville totaled a team score of 166, beating Savannah Christian by five strokes.</p><p>Darnell shot a 1-under 71 to win individual title. She knocked off Hart County senior Anna Rogers, who was seeking for her third consecutive individual title.</p><p>Rogers finished second, three shots back.</p><p>"Anna played one of her best rounds, but it wasn't enough," Hart County coach Joby Scroggs said. "She was a little bit disappointed, but she'll be remembered around Hart County for a long time."</p><p>Hill won his fourth state title in two seasons _ two in girl's golf, two in girl's basketball.</p><p>"I'm going to buy a lottery ticket tonight and see if I can't win that, too," Hill said. "This type of thing usually only happens in movie scripts."</p><p>Glynn Academy had a record-setting day while sweeping the AAAAA titles at Jekyll Island.</p><p>The boys won their 11th championship and set a 36-hole state mark, shooting 569 on the Oleander course to beat the previous record of 580 _ Glynn Academy's winning score in 2000.</p><p>Centennial finished second at 584, while Parkview was another eight shots back in third.</p><p>Glynn Academy senior Gordon Strother shot a 4-under 140 to win the individual championship. Teammate Chris Johnson was a stroke behind.</p><p>On the girls side, Glynn Academy broke the 18-hole record by 10 strokes, shooting 140 on the Pine Lakes course. The old mark of 150 was last done by Oconee County, which won the 2003 title.</p><p>The defending champions dropped to third this year at 157. McIntosh (153) was second.</p><p>Garrett Phillips of Glynn Academy and Margaret Shirley of Lassiter shared the individual crown at 5-under 67, tying the previous low score.</p><p>Dalton won the Class AAAA boys title with a 292, six shots ahead of Hardaway at Fields Ferry Golf Course in Calhoun. It was the eighth state title for Dalton, but the first since 1998.</p><p>Matt Hughes of Dalton won the individual title with 69. Four players tied for second at 71.</p><p>Savannah Christian's boys were back on top, winning the AAA title at Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Cedartown. They shot 292 to defeat LaGrange by eight shots.</p><p>Defending champion Richmond Academy, which ended Savannah Christian's five-year championship run in 2003, finished third this time at 310.</p><p>Brian Harman dominated the individual competition, shooting a brilliant 64 to beat Taylor Hall of LaGrange by a whopping six strokes.</p><p>In AA, Vidalia repeated as boys champion _ its sixth title in the past 11 years _ with a 300 total at Coosa Country Club in Rome. Darlington was eight shots behind, with Blessed Trinity in third at 313.</p><p>Matt Dale of Banks County won the individual title with a 68, beating Mark Harrell of Jeff Davis by two strokes. Daniel Rice was another shot back, leading three Vidalia golfers who placed in the top eight.</p><p>Blessed Trinity won the AA girls title for the second year in a row at 160, five strokes ahead of Wesleyan. Darlington was another three shots back.</p><p>Ashley Medders of Bacon Country won the individual crown with a 72 at Cherokee Golf and Country Club in Cedartown. Jayne Curtis of Calhoun and Sarah Tullis of Wesleyan tied for second with a 76.</p>
