'I want you': Love letters to student land teacher in trouble

By The Associated Press

Racy notes from a high school teacher to one of her 17-year-old students were discovered in his locker, leading to an investigation and resignation of the teacher.

Among the 13 notes attributed to Westover High School English teacher Carla Murray, 32, were poems and admonitions after the relationship apparently went sour with the boy.

"It pleases me that you want me as much as I want you," read one note, obtained by WALB and The Albany Herald after the news outlets sued to have the notes made public.

Another note included this poem: "The smell of your cologne mixed w/sweat/ The sounds you make while _ / The touch of your hands/ The taste of your mouth,/ There's more, but I won't embarrass myself by mentioning them."

School officials found the notes after tips from students led them to the locker. While Murray was being investigated, she resigned. She is under contract and will be paid until it ends in June. The boy has not been named.

Albany Police will review the letters to see if criminal charges are warranted, said Capt. Charlie Poole.

Especially worrisome to officials were the notes written after the relationship ended.

"I hate to see you flirting," Murray allegedly wrote, and, "I'll try not to be super stalker for a few days."

In another letter: "I hope you don't mind if I keep tabs on you. ... So if I look mad ... it's really sadness you're looking at."

The letters were unsigned. School investigators determined Murray wrote them after a handwriting expert read the notes aloud to Murray and had her rewrite them.

An attorney for the Dougherty County School Board, Tommy Coleman, said the romantic relationship was widely suspected at the 1,000-student school.

"These kinds of things can really disrupt a school," he said.

Murray's attorney, Howard Stiller, said Murray was a dedicated professional, although he wouldn't talk about specifics of the case.

"She was a very educated, bright and articulate teacher," he said.

In addition to a criminal investigation, Murray faces a June professional review by state education officials, who could revoke her teaching certificate.
