UGA student will spend summer in jail for friend's death

<p>A University of Georgia student will spend the summer in jail after pleading no contest to killing his fraternity brother in a boating accident last fall.</p><p>Robert Cannon of Roswell was accused of driving a boat under the influence Aug. 22 when he hit a railroad trestle on Swift Creek, about 130 miles south of Atlanta.</p><p>Tommy O'Rourke died of severe head injuries, while Cannon and a third passenger were not injured.</p><p>Cannon was originally charged with DUI, but the grand jury added misdemeanor charges of reckless operation of a vessel and violation of boat-operation rules. The grand jury also tagged on a felony, homicide by a vessel.</p><p>Cannon will serve his sentence in the Crisp County jail from May 1 to Aug. 1, said Assistant District Attorney Barbara Becraft. He will then be on probation for 10 years and could pay up to $24,000 in fines and surcharges, she said.</p>
