A 17-year-old has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty in a man's shooting death.

Jeffrey McCrary of Macon pleaded guilty Monday to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime, Houston County District Attorney Kelly Burke said.

The guilty plea came before the start of McCrary's trial on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a crime. McCrary had been accused of shooting and killing Bryant Monroe, 28, in front of Monroe's Warner Robins home on Sept. 29.

Burke said the shooting happened during a "transaction that went sour," declining to elaborate.

A third person, who was not identified, fired a shot in the air in an attempt to scare off McCrary, said Burke. McCrary claimed he thought he was under fire and shot Monroe in self-defense, Burke said.

Because the state didn't exactly have "nuns for witnesses" and because a jury might believe McCrary's self-defense claim, a deal was made, Burke said.

___

HASH(0x286650c)
