MARIETTA - A 15-month-old boy who was allegedly abducted by his father after a domestic dispute early Sunday was returned to his grandparents after a statewide Levi's Call alert, police said.
The father, Rey Reyes, was charged with domestic violence and one count of cruelty to children after surrendering to police about 10:50 a.m. Sunday, said Officer Brian Marshall of the Marietta Police Department.
Reyes' wife called police after an argument the couple had while driving northbound on Interstate 75 shortly after midnight, Marietta police said in a news release. Reyes allegedly stopped the car on the side of the road and struck his wife several times before forcing her out of the car and driving off with their son, Harrison George Reyes.
The woman, whose name was not released, told police that Reyes has considered suicide before and might leave the child unattended if he decided to harm himself. The woman was treated at a local hospital for cuts and bruises and released Sunday morning.
Marshall said Reyes called police Sunday morning after hearing about the Levi's Call.
"He was upset we didn't have his side of the story," he said.
Officer Jeff Reed negotiated the terms under which Reyes agreed to return the child and surrender, Marshall said.

"We were able to negotiate him coming in as long as there were no news cameras," he said. "Officer Reed negotiated a time and circumstance and made it fair for Mr. Reyes to do it comfortably."
Alerts were posted on interstate signs early Sunday morning, identifying Reyes' automobile and license plate number.
"The system worked exactly the way it was supposed to," Marshall said.
