Parade car strikes pedestrians; extent of injuries unknown

<p>At least six people were struck by a convertible in the city's St. Patrick's Day parade Wednesday when the vehicle suddenly accelerated through an intersection.</p><p>The injured were taken by ambulance to local hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately available.</p><p>The car had stopped and then was attempting to pass another group in the parade when it drove out of control through the intersection of Bull and State streets near the center of downtown Savannah, striking the six people, said Bucky Burnsed, police spokesman.</p><p>The driver is being questioned by police, Burnsed said.</p><p>Witnesses said they believed the injured included several members of a marching band that was in front of the car in the parade order.</p><p>Some of the injured were pedestrians who were among dozens of people who had gathered to watch the parade near the intersection, police said.</p><p>"People were diving out of the way," said Jeff Gronner of Savannah. "It's a miracle that more people weren't hit."</p><p>Gronner said people were screaming as the car raced toward them. He estimated the car was traveling at about 30 mph.</p><p>The vehicle, a gold Chrysler Sebring with green shamrocks taped on its sides, had its windshield smashed.</p><p>The accident happened at about 12:15 p.m., about midway through the parade, which is the nation's second largest St. Patrick's Day parade.</p>
