By The Associated Press

Eighteen times he's tried, and 18 times they've kept him in prison.

Sammy Haynes, who was sentenced to 28 life sentences after his 1969 crime spree left six dead, will remain in the Reidsville state prison for at least seven more years. The 52-year-old man's parole was denied last week.

State parole board Chairman Buddy Nix said the board has repeatedly denied Haynes' parole because his four-month crime stint was so ruthless.

"This man is why prisons are built," Nix said.

Haynes was 17 at the time of his crimes. Between June and September 1969, Haynes stabbed a 12-year-old Atlanta boy, shot a 16-year-old hitchhiker in the mouth and stole $4 from his pocket and shot a security guard in the back on Bankhead Highway. A parole board news release said Haynes killed the guard because he was planning to kill the next police officer he saw.

Along with the murders, Haynes also committed 20 armed robberies and one rape during the four-month period. Nix said Haynes also has robbery and assault charges on his juvenile record.

Haynes has been in Georgia prisons for 34 years. The board will not consider Haynes for parole again until October 2011.
