Former Treutlen Co. sheriff sentenced to probation for excessive force

<p>Former Treutlen County Sheriff Wayne Hooks was sentenced Wednesday to five years probation for using excessive force on two men at the county jail.</p><p>A federal jury found Hooks, 50, guilty on Aug. 22 of depriving Steven Tanner and Tony King of their civil rights at the Treutlen County Jail on Oct. 27, 2001.</p><p>Trial evidence proved Hooks slapped both men while they were handcuffed with their hands behind their backs, the U.S. Attorneys Office said in a statement.</p><p>Hooks, who resigned his position on Aug. 22 when he was found guilty, must pay a fine of $3,500. His probation sentence includes six months of home detention.</p>
