Fort Benning soldiers 5-year-old stepdaughter dies

<p>A 5-year-old girl died Sunday while her stepfather, a Fort Benning solider, remains in jail, accused of causing her injuries.</p><p>India Barrow was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, Muscogee County Coroner James Dunnavant said. An autopsy will be performed Monday in Atlanta to determine the cause of death.</p><p>The child was brought to the hospital unconscious Tuesday after Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel were called to the familys Conner Road home.</p><p>Christopher B. Wright, Indias stepfather, told Columbus police he found India unconscious in her bed.</p><p>Hospital authorities called police after discovering a possible injury to the childs brain stem in addition to other unexplained bruises to her buttocks and to her thighs, police said.</p><p>Wright, 29, is being held without bond in Muscogee County Jail on an aggravated assault family violence charge and on a $100,000 bond for first-degree cruelty to children.</p><p>Wrights charges may change pending the outcome of the autopsy, Police Sgt. Harvey Hatcher said Sunday. Dunnavant said he should have a cause of death on Tuesday.</p><p>Wright has previously been the subject of investigations by both the Department of Family and Children Services and by the Criminal Investigation Division on post, police said.</p>
