GAINESVILLE - Hall County has its sixth confirmed case of rabies this year.
Gainesville-Hall County Animal Control officials say rabies was present in a skunk picked up by Animal Control Officers Monday following an alert by a North Hall resident.
They received that confirmation Wednesday morning after the animal's body was tested at the Virology Lab of Georgia Public Health in Atlanta.
Animal control spokeswoman Tammi McClellan said the skunk came in contact with at least two domestic animals - two dogs, but that they are going to be okay.
"The dogs were current on their rabies shots and they are being revaccinated at this time."
The skunk was found on Kenimer Road, off Georgia Highway 52.
McClellan said animal control officers were canvassing that area at mid-morning Wednesday, letting residents know about the rabid animal and urging that they make sure their dogs, cats, etc. are current on their rabies vaccinations.
Of the six confirmed cases in Hall County so far this year, three have now been found in North Hall, one in East Hall, and two in South Hall.
McClellan says if you notice any domestic animals acting abnormally, contact Animal Control at (770) 531-6830. If after hours, contact Hall County Dispatch at (770) 536-8812. If a wild animal is observed acting abnormally, contact the Georgia Department of Natural Resources at (770) 535-5700.
