Timber dealer sentenced for defrauding saw mills

<p>A Georgia timber dealer was sentenced Wednesday to five years and 10 months in prison for defrauding a saw mill of $6.7 million by charging for logs that were not delivered.</p><p>U.S. District Judge Orinda Evans also ordered John F. Thompson III to pay restitution of $6,731,472 and to perform 100 hours of community service.</p><p>Evans sentenced Annie M. Bailey, 59, of Musella, who operated scales at the saw mill and helped in the scheme, to serve 1 year and 11 months in federal prison, to pay the same amount of restitution and perform 100 hours of community service.</p><p>Thompson, 54, of Palmetto was convicted in August of of conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and mail fraud for paying Bailey to create phantom loads of timber at the Barnesville saw mill.</p><p>Bailey testified for the government at Thompsons trial after pleading guilty to violating tax laws.</p>
