LAWRENCEVILLE - About 140 players came out for the start of football practice at Collins Hill High School, the largest school in Georgia with an enrollment of about 4,000.
About ten miles away at state runner-up Brookwood, the number of players was a whopping 190, and down the road another couple of miles, defending three-time Class AAAAA state champ Parkview had 168 players.
It appears to be making a difference on the field, too. Since 1996, when Brookwood won its only state championship, schools from Gwinnett have won five titles, including the three straight by Parkview.
But Valdosta High School has won 23 state championships, a national record 802 games and six unofficial national titles -- but just one of those came in the past ten years.
