GAINESVLLE, FLORIDA - Florida quarterback Gavin Dickey said Friday he has met with Gators' coach Ron Zook and has decided to keep battling for the team's open quarterback position rather than transfer.

Dickey, a redshirt freshman, has been battling for Florida's starting quarterback spot this fall, but appears to be running third behind Ingle Martin and true freshman Chris Leak.

``I'm here for the whole year,'' Dickey said. ``Those two guys are ahead of me in the battle, but there's a long war ahead.''

Martin and Leak have been getting most of the repetitions in practice the last three days, and the duo split all the reps Friday night in a two-minute drill at the end of practice.

Zook said Dickey met him with earlier in the week to discuss his status. Friday night, Dickey said Zook gave him encouragement in that meeting.

``He just told me to keep getting better,'' Dickey said. ``He said I've been improving a lot over these two weeks and am steadily on an incline.''

Dickey, one of three Parade All-America quarterbacks on the roster along with Martin and Dickey, emphasized that he had not given up on eventually beating out his two competitors.

``My desire is to be the Gator quarterback,'' Dickey said. ``Right now I'm not thinking about (transferring). I'm focused on being the starting quarterback. That's my number one goal.''
Florida opens against San Jose State Aug. 30 at Florida Field.

Zook has refused to name a starter thus far.
``Who knows what's going to happen in the next three weeks,'' Zook said. ``Gavin is a winner and he's a competitor. Gavin will play some quarterback at the University of Florida. I believe that.''
