Steve Chumbler, a freshman fullback/linebacker at Darlington School, spent the weekend in intensive care after hitting his head in a tackle.
Chumbler's mother, Kay Chumbler, said the boy is recovering, alert and ready to come home as soon as this weekend.
``He is feeling better,'' Chumbler said.
Darlington, which opens the regular season on Sept. 5, went through a light practice in shirts and shorts on Monday.
Tigers coach Tommy Atha said Chumbler has been on everybody's mind since Friday night.
``Steve has had a tremendous amount of support since it happened,'' he said. ``There's been a flood of coaches, players, friends and family who have gone to see him. All of the guys are concerned about him.''
