That's Not Just Eatin'; That's Livin'

By Gordon Sawyer 7/14/03
I've got a birthday coming up. No need to tell you which one it is, but it's getting up there, and I want you to know I got some really good news the other day. I saw some research that says there are certain things us old Geezers don't need to worry about any more ... like what we eat.

You see, I've always liked eggs, and I especially enjoy a cold glass of milk now and then. Well, somewhere along the line ... probably about age 40 ... some scientist did some research on six inmates in some prison and determined that eggs had cholesterol
and therefore were bad for you. It was in the early part of the era when scientific research always had a dark, gloomy and suspicious side, and even if the odds were a million-toone it might hurt you, then either you ought to quit or the government ought to make you quit.
I briefly thought about my mother, who ate eggs and drank milk and eventually lived to be 97, but I joined the Lemmings ... I joined the crowd ... and cut way down on eggs and milk and other good things like that. I didn't go so far as to eat tofu, but I gave up eating a lot of good stuff.

Now comes new scientific research, and it says after the age where I am now it won't make much difference, if any, what I eat. You will live just about as long eating all those things as you would if you didn't eat them. They say we ought to eat in moderation and get exercise, but when it comes to eggs and milk ... go for it.

I've got a question for the researchers, though: do I really have to limit my new diet to milk and eggs? Can I throw in real butter and cheese, and pour a bunch of whiteeye gravy on my biscuits at breakfast? That's not only eating; that's living.
