Fresh berries are expensive, but can be twice as costly during colder months. I always know summer is here when strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries actually factor into my grocery budget. And right now is just the beginning. Prices should continue to go down as the quality goes up, for the next few months anyway. What a terrific time to try some new recipes and take advantage of berry season.
Besides being delicious, berries are loaded with vitamins, most notably vitamin C. All are low in fat and calories, but high in fiber, something the average American does not get enough of. In addition, strawberries contain a substance called ellagic acid, which has been linked to fighting certain cancer-causing agents. Generally even the most picky children will eat berries, especially strawberries and blueberries. Try serving berries with strawberry yogurt for breakfast. For a quick and elegant dessert, top store bought angel food cake (or pound cake) with fresh berries and whipped cream. I love spinach salad when it has fresh strawberries in it. The raspberry vinegar makes a nice summer gift for someone special.
