ALLEN PARK, MICHIGAN - Following in your brother's footsteps can sometimes be a real advantage.

Just ask Detroit Lions rookie Boss Bailey.

The Georgia linebacker was snatched up by the team in the second round of the draft. Bailey's older brother, Champ, is a Pro Bowl cornerback for the Washington Redskins.

So in a way, Boss Bailey had inside knowledge coming into this weekend's minicamp at the Lions' practice facility in Allen Park.

Bailey said, ``He filled me in a lot about the minicamp and the dos and the don'ts so I feel pretty comfortable coming in.''

Bailey will certainly get every chance to help the Lions this season.

One of the things coach Steve Mariucci wanted to improve was speed on team defense and Bailey, a former high school track star, excels in that area, with sub-4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash.

Originally projected as a late first-round pick, Bailey was still available when the Lions picked in the second round.

Some teams might have been scared off by the fact that Bailey had two knee surgeries, in 1997 and 2000, both on his ACL.

Bailey said, ``I've been fine. I played two full seasons with no games missed.''
