Memorial Day is the day we remember and pay homage to all those who have given their lives, and all who have offered their lives, that we in the United States might be free. It is a day on which we remember and say "thank you" to all those who have served ... and are serving right now ... those in the Army, the navy, the Air Force, the Marines, the Coast Guard, and here at home our policemen and firemen.
Memorial Day is the day we as individuals commit ourselves to maintaining that great tradition that says this is the land of the free and the home of the brave ... not only now but also for future generations. It is a day we unashamedly say we are "patriotic" and that "We are proud to be an American."
This weekend Northeast Georgia will have an old-fashioned series of Memorial events, and everybody is invited to participate. It will kick off at 3:30 p.m. Sunday with a ceremony along the highway in front of Gainesville College in which that area will be dedicated as a Blue Star highway. Then on Monday next, May 26, at 10 a.m. a huge parade will step off on Green Street. And at 1 p.m. there will be a major patriotic program at the Court House with a Senator, the Governor, Congressmen, and others. The American Legion, and all those sponsoring this event, invite you ... no, urge you ... to come and be a part.
This is Gordon Sawyer, and may the wind always be at your back.
