COLUMBUS - As family members on both sides of the courtroom wept, a west Georgia man was sentenced Friday to life in prison in the murder of his brother-in-law.
James Holsey, 31, was found guilty of shooting his Ron Robinson in the neck after arguing with Robinson's sister, Holsey's wife, in July. Witnesses testified that Holsey then chased his wife outside their Columbus home and tried to shoot her.
Holsey testified that he shot Robinson in self-defense after the two got into an argument that turned physical.
At the sentencing hearing, Robinson's mother, Ida Crawford, told Muscogee County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Followill that she feels pain for her son's death every day. She then turned to Holsey.
``I love you, Jamie,'' she said. ``I loved you then. I love you now. But what you did was wrong.''
Holsey apologized to his wife's family.
Followill added 10 years for assaulting his wife to the life sentence and five years for possessing a gun during the crime.
Holsey won't be eligible for parole for at least 29 years.
