ATLANTA - A bill supported by anti-abortion advocates now heads for the Senate floor after being approved in committee.

The bill would require a woman to wait 24 hours before getting an abortion. it also would require doctors to give women specific information about having an abortion, including the physical and emotional risks.

Republican Senator Don Cheeks of Augusta sponsored the measure.

Similar statutes exist in 18 other states. Four others have passed the legislation, but courts or the attorney general in those states have said those laws are unconstitutional and cannot be enforced.
