In an open letter to state workers, top state officials and the media. Perdue said he'd like Georgia's residents to get in shape physically while state government shapes up fiscally.
Perdue spokeswoman Erin O'Brien says the governor, who stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds, wants to lose 20 pounds as part of a program he calls ``the governor's Capitol challenge.''

O'Brien says the governor will not go on a name weight loss plan but will follow a program emphasizing healthy eating, fitness and goal setting.
The governor's letter says that professionals in several health-related fields have volunteered to help with the program.
The deadline for signing up is Friday, and participants will do a starting weigh-in Monday.
