SAVANNAH - A Savannah physician could go from the jury box to a jail cell for disobeying a judge's order not to read the newspaper.
Superior Court Judge Michael Karpf cited Doctor James Ramage for contempt of court Tuesday after the prospective juror admitted reading the paper after he had been called for jury duty in a capital murder trial.
Twenty-five-year-old Bernard Jerome Green faces the death penalty if convicted of the 1999 slaying of a tourist.
Ramage faces a fine of up to 500 dollars and up to 20 days in jail.
When the jury pool of about 300 gathered in Karpf's courtroom Friday, the judge told them not to discuss the case with anyone, watch local TV news or read the papers during the weekend break.
During jury selection Monday and Tuesday, Karpf asked jurors whether they had followed his instructions. Ramage told the judge he had read a newspaper, including an article about the murder case.
Ramage said, ``I read the paper every day.''
Attorneys agreed to dismiss Ramage as a juror. Karpf told the doctor he would be sentenced later.
The judge said, ``You're free now to read all the newspapers you want. And maybe you'll even see your own name in there for being cited for contempt.''
