MACON - A 25-year-old Macon woman was arrested for trying to kill her newborn son by putting him in a plastic bag, sheriff's investigators said.
Emergency medical workers found the baby unconscious and not breathing shortly after his birth Wednesday, but they were able to revive him. The Department of Family and Children Services now has custody of the child.
Debra Wright, who also uses the name Debra Jaenee Jackson, was charged with aggravated assault with intent to murder and first-degree child neglect. After one day in the hospital, she was being held at the Bibb County jail.
Wright called for an ambulance around 3 p.m. Wednesday and said she had abdominal pain, authorities said. When the ambulance arrived, Wright was covered with blood.
She told emergency workers that she put her bloodstained clothes in a plastic bag, but a member of the ambulance crew became suspicious and asked for the bag. Under the clothing, they found the baby, authorities said.
Investigators suspect Wright was hiding her pregnancy. She has three other children who also were taken into state custody: a 15-month-old girl, a 2-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy.
